One of the most unforgettable deaths in Sons of Anarchy was that of Half-Sack, who was killed off in season 2 – and here's why.
Sons of anarchy wh halfsack was killed off in season 2
Sons of Anarchy saw a bunch of beloved characters die, and season 2 had one of the most shocking and heartbreaking deaths when prospect Half-Sack was stabbed to death – but why was Half-Sack killed off so soon? Back in 2008, Kurt Sutter took the audience into the world of motorcycle clubs in Sons of Anarchy, a crime-drama TV series that was praised by critics and viewers from its first episodes. This success allowed Sons of Anarchy to live on for a total of seven seasons, coming to an end in 2014 after a lot of betrayals, fights, and some truly tragic events.
Leading Sons of Anarchy was Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam), the club’s VP and son of one of its founding members, who eventually became the President of the MC. The events of the series begin when Jax finds a manifesto written by his father in which he detailed his plans and vision for the club, which were the opposite of those of the current President (and Jax’s stepfather), Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman). This, along with other conflicts, sends Jax on a personal journey that makes him question his path, role in the club, relationships, and more. Through Jax, viewers got to see how the club worked and met some of its most notable members, among those Half-Sack (Johnny Lewis).
Kip ‘Half-Sack’ Epps was introduced in Sons of Anarchy season 1 and was a prospect of SAMCRO, meaning that he was given all those undesirable tasks that no one wanted to do but had to be done, but the rest of the club was often nice to him when assigning him these tasks. Half-Sack was a recurrent character in the first two seasons of Sons of Anarchy, and he won the audience over thanks to his loyalty and obedience, as well as his bravery and innocence, but sadly, his time in the show was short and he was killed in the finale of season 2, and surprisingly, this happened at Lewis’ request.
Sons of Anarchy Half Sack prospect
Speaking to Alan Sepinwall in a 2009 interview (via Looper), Kurt Sutter revealed that Half-Sack’s departure from Sons of Anarchy happened at Lewis’ request, as Johnny “wasn’t happy on the show” and “creatively, he really wanted out of his contract”. Sutter talked to Lewis about Half-Sacks’ fate, and they decided to find a noble way for him to go. Years later, Lewis’ father, Michael Lewis, shared (via LA Magazine) that Johnny decided to leave Sons of Anarchy because “the show was getting into gratuitous violence”, and he didn’t want to communicate that. Half-Sack was given a heroic goodbye in Sons of Anarchy, as he was tasked with watching over Gemma and Tara, but the former left to exact revenge on Polly Zobelle. Half-Sack returned to Jax’s home but was followed by Cameron Hayes, who as revenge for his son’s murder, threatened to kill Jax’s son, Abel Teller. In order to protect Abel and Tara, Half-Sack rushed towards Cameron, who stabbed the young prospect.
After leaving Sons of Anarchy, Lewis appeared in the movies The Runaways, Lovely Molly, Magic Valley, and 186 Dollars to Freedom, but unfortunately, in 2011, he suffered head injuries from a motorcycle accident that led to a lot of trouble with the law and his mental health in the following months. Lewis was found dead in September 2012 in a very complicated case that included the murder of his landlady, with his death ruled accidental. Johnny Lewis played one of Sons of Anarchy’s most memorable recurrent characters, and neither viewers nor the characters of the show ever forgot about Half-Sack and how he protected Abel and Tara with his life.
