A fire Saturday at a Kakao data center in Pangyo, south of Seoul, has led to a server outage affecting the Kakao Talk messenger app, along with other apps such as Kakao Taxi, Kakao Map, Kakao Metro, Kakao Bank, Kakao-owned portal Daum and music streaming service Melon.
The internet connection for the apps has been unavailable since 3p.m.
"There has been a fire at SK C&C data center since 3 p.m. Work has begun to put down the fire, but we are uncertain when the fire will be completely subdued," said John Kim, a PR manager at Kakao.
‘KakaoTalk, South Korea’s largest messenger service by Kakao (KRX: 035720), has suffered a
service outage.
A fire broke out in the Kakao data center, causing outages across all Kakao services, including
‘Kakao Messenger, Portal Daum, Kakao T (Mobility), Kekaoopage, and Kakao Pay.

<All fires in the data center were extinguished at 11:45 p.m on asth October. eight hours after the
fire at SK Pangyo Data Center caused the outage of the Kakzo Talk service.
‘Firefighters said they deployed more than 30 appliances, including 8o firefighters and fire
trucks, to extinguish the fire starting at 3:45 pm.
‘Two hours later, at 5:46 p.m. firefighters caught a large fire.
‘They finished extinguishing the fire at 13:45 p.m.
‘There are no injuries, and all 20 people who were in the building at the time ofthe fire were
evacuated.
‘The fire broke out in the third basement of SK Pangyo Campus A-dong, Sampyeong-dong,
‘Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, where data management facilities such as Kakao had
‘moved in around 3:30 p.m. yesterday.
As result, some services such as Kakao Talk, Kakao T, the portal site Daum, and the Naver
‘Smart Store have been interrupted so far.
‘The building that caught fire is a facility where Naver, Kakao, and SK carriers, six floors above
and four floors below ground.

‘Kakao announced that service was restored to normal within 2 hours, including distribution
across the system, as power was restored to the datacenter.
‘Since the services of Kakao and Naver being collocated in SK, C&C has faced a service disaster.
‘SK C&C said, “The fire at Pangyo Data Center started in the power facilities but did not spread to
the server room or computing room. However, after the power was cut off, we continued to
